Oregon is an interesting place –beautiful natural scenes, quirky little towns, and a political divide that’s sometimes surprising in its starkness. Regardless, it’s an interesting place to visit, especially the little college town of Corvallis. Home of Oregon State University (Not to be confused with the University of Oregon), Corvallis is a sleepy little haven in the summer and the usual packed-to-the-brim college town during the academic year. There’s quite an array of organic stores, antique fairs, family restaurants, and coffeeshops. I happened to be in town for the annual air show; if anything, it and Corvallis’ unique public art fixtures make the area worth a visit.
Just a few hours by car is the Pacific Ocean, whose frigid waters are startling at first. But the beauty of the waves and the charm of the coastal towns, like Newport, Ore., make up for it.
